Remember that one time I lived in Bulgaria? Well, I’m finally getting around to blogging about all my experiences there and realized I overlooked a major event: the Kazanlak Rose Festival! Did you know that Bulgaria produces up to 85% of all the world’s rose oil? And that it takes 3.5 tons of rose petals or around 1 million roses to produce 1 kilogram of rose oil! Seriously crazy. Rose oil is highly sought after because it is the basis of many perfumes and other cosmetic products.
These old guys were taking swigs of hard alcohol by 9 am. Needless to say, they were having a great time at the Rose Festival! Also, I kind of became best friends with them and they kept trying to get me to drink with them (which I kept declining!). Too funny!
While there are Rose Festivals held throughout Bulgaria during the height of rose season (May and June), the best and most famous festival is the first week of June in Kazanlak, Bulgaria. If possible, try to visit the sunrise rose picking ceremony on the outskirts of the city!
